Eco-aware Homeowners Could Benefit From 'green Mortgage' |
|
(1st August 2008)
Consumers looking for green banking products may be interested in a mortgage from the Ecology Building Society.
The institution's C-Change for Home Improvements mortgage allows borrowers to receive a one per cent reduction in the rate for any money spent on energy-efficient or sustainable work they do on their home.
And the society says that with a competitive rate of 6.45 per cent anyway, the discount and savings in home energy costs mean customers may be better off with green banking.
Paul Ellis, Ecology chief executive, says: "Our C-Change mortgage borrowers are already greening their streets and making a direct contribution to reducing carbon emissions, while benefiting from long-term discounts which don't rely on switching every couple of years.
"Ecology mortgages are truly green unlike carbon offset deals which are akin to closing the stable door after the carbon horse has bolted."
According to the Energy Saving Trust, £1.3 billion is spent in the UK each year powering washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers and a further £1.5 billion a year on fridges and freezers.
